By reducing particle size, the drug’s exposed surface area is increased and is then stabilized
to maintain the reduc ed particle size. The result is a stable drug formulation that exhibits
an increased dissolution rate.

Elan's NanoCrystal® Technology is a drug enablement and optimization technology applicable to poorly water-soluble compounds and is part of a suite of technologies that Elan Drug Technologies (EDT) offers to third party clients. Elan’s NanoCrystal® Technology has offered tangible patient benefits to a number of compounds including:

  • for one product, now commercialized the technology improved bioavailability by up to 600%
  • for another launched, it allowed a four-fold reduction in dosage volume
  • for others it eliminated the fed-fasting effects, providing clear patient benefits
  • one cancer compound in development offers the possibility of increasing the maximum tolerated dose 10-fold

NanoCrystal® Particles are small particles of drug substance, typically less than 1,000 nanometers (nm)  in diameter, which are produced by milling the drug substance using a proprietary, wet-milling technique. The NanoCrystal® particles of the drug are stabilized against agglomeration by surface adsorption of selected GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) stabilizers.

The result is an aqueous dispersion of the drug substance that behaves like a solution - a NanoCrystal Colloidal Dispersion™ solution, which can be processed into finished dosage forms for all routes of administration.
